Silver Fox Charters is located in breathtaking Homer, Alaska, “The Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” and has been serving anglers since 1974. We are one of Alaska’s most established charter fishing businesses. Whether you are looking for a full or half day halibut trip, a combination trip for halibut and salmon or a long range trip, no one works harder to provide you with a quality experience, a boat load of fun and a mess of fish. Although halibut is our main stay, we also offer trips that will target other species along with halibut. Long range halibut trips can be arranged that also target rockfish or we can combine halibut trips with the ultimate salmon fishing experience.
Our halibut season starts in the Spring and continues through Fall. A typical full day trip is 8-10 hours long, depending on tides, weather, and of course fishing. These trips have been the status quo for nearly 30 years now. You may travel up to 2-3 hrs. to reach the fishing grounds or be as close as 45 minutes from the dock and fish in depths ranging from 20 ft to over 300 ft, depending on where the fish have been. For our full day trips, you’ll want to bring a lunch, snacks, drinks and your camera as these trips take us to some of the most beautiful fishing spots in Alaska. As with all fishing there are no guarantees but these trips will offer you the best shot at one of those monster halibut you have heard so much about.
Now the most popular trip in Homer, we debated a long time about how to offer these trips while maintaining a quality fishing experience. Our solution was to begin offering 3/4 day trips. Expect a 6 hr. trip, give or take a few minutes, with an average run time to the fishing grounds of under an hour.
We also offer salmon fishing trips either on their own or combined with a halibut fishing trip. The salmon fishing has two major runs, the first is the mighty King Salmon or Chinook. Ranging from 10 to 50+ lbs. this run is best from mid-May thru the end of June. The second run is the Silver Salmon or Coho that starts late July and goes thru September. During this run you also have the opportunity of catching feeder or local King Salmon, making this a very exciting time of the season for salmon fishing. Most of our salmon fishing is done by trolling with downriggers, although sometimes we drift with weighted herring (mooching). Salmon fishing may be in the middle of Cook Inlet or right off the end of the Homer Spit depending on the run at any particular time.
